Main reason for going green? It’s all about the dollars
If you could guess, what would you say is the top reason why most consumers choose a green-built home?
Is it because it’s healthier to live in one? Maybe because it’s good for the environment?
Of course not: It’s money — green of a different kind — that drives people to build or purchase a green home.
This not-so-surprising fact was the key finding of a new survey for the National Association of Home Builders. The survey asked consumers what they considered the biggest benefits of living in an environmentally friendly green home. The top answer was that such homes boast lower monthly energy bills.
A total of 64 percent of 800 respondents cited energy savings as the primary reason to live green. The fact that green homes are healthier came in as the second most important reason, with 55 percent of survey participants citing it as a reason to live green. In third place, and cited by 49 percent of respondents, was the fact that building and living green is the right thing to do for the environment.
Does this make fans of green building, or the owners of environmentally friendly homes, less altruistic? Not in my opinion. By building or buying an energy efficient, environmentally friendly home, you’re doing good for the environment. If you save a few extra dollars every month in energy bills — and even if that is your main reason for going green — then that’s a just reward.
By the way, you can expect, as homeowners watch their monthly energy bills continue to rise, that even more consumers will yearn for those low energy bills boasted by green residences.
