Housing slump slowing some areas’ population growth

by Dan on March 24th, 2008

How powerful of an impact has the housing slump had on the country? Some researchers say that it’s slowed migration to some of the country’s formerly fastest-growing cities.

A report released last week by The Brookings Institution, a think tank, said that the housing slowdown has slowed the formerly fast growth of cities in places like Florida and the Mountain West region. Previously, the hot housing market, which has, of course, cooled considerably, helped fuel large population growth in these parts of the country.

You can read the report here.

According to the institute, migration to formerly hot cities has slowed because people are struggling to sell their homes. This is forcing them to stay put.

Again, this is only more evidence that the country’s housing slump is a deep and serious one. It’s also one that’s not going away any time soon.
