Homeowners associations called ‘major headache’

by Dan on October 23rd, 2007

Here’s a surprising fact from a recent survey: Most people don’t like others to tell them what to do.

Nearly 70 percent of homeowners in a recent survey said that homeowners associations are a “major headache” or a “minor annoyance.” The associations have such a bad reputation, that 25 percent of the respondents to the survey had never lived under the rules of one.

That’s a high percentage of dissatisfaction. A lot of homeowners, then, must be getting headaches on a regular basis. According to the Community Associations Institute – a trade group based in Alexandria, Va., more than 57 million people live in single-family homes or condominiums governed by a homeowners association.

You can read about the survey here at the news site MarketWatch, which earlier this week ran an interesting story on it. The folks behind the study surveyed 3,000 homeowners who subscribe to a newsletter published by Service Magic, a company known for hooking up customers and contractors.

Respondents said they were most upset when dues unexpectedly increased and when rules suddenly changed. Some of the most common complaints centered around what types and numbers of pets owners can have, what colors they can paint their homes, what types of fences they can erect and what, if any, types of home businesses they can run from their residences.

It’s a survey buyers should keep in mind when they’re looking for a home. That perfect condo or townhouse may not look so great when you factor in the dues that associations charge or their ability to regulate many of the choices homeowners often take for granted.
