Dream Home Diaries: A true story of a couple who set out to build their dream house
Dream Home Diaries chronicles the adventures, success and failures of Paul Brown and Alison Davis in building their dream house. They planned to build a cottage in Santa Maria Island, an idyllic tiny town in Florida. The interesting twist is they live 1,500 miles away, they’ve never built a home before and they don’t know anything about architects, builders, local zoning laws or financing. Their blog immortalizes the adventure that some of us had been dreaming of doing someday but don’t know when and how to pursue it.
In their latest article, The Good News and The Bad they had a reality check:
"Maybe we needed to scale back our expectations. The house plans included everything we wanted, but in creating the home of our dreams, we might end up with a house we didn’t really like."
Building your dream requires some flexibility. On paper you could have everything that you wanted, but in reality a lot of factors must be considered. Some of the things that could alter the design of your dream house are the costs involved, suitability of your dream house to the location, how will your lifestyle adapt to your future home, the needs of the rest of the household, is your dream house doable in your chosen location and will it merit the approval of the local building officials.
All these and more were discussed in their blog. It makes an interesting read for those who want to learn from their experience. You can also have an insight of the emotions and the work involved in building your dream house. In fact, they compared their experience to drinking coffee:
"Building a dream house is not for those who buy their morning coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts because Starbucks takes too long."
It does take a lot of planning. It will be a true test of your patience at the same time. Well, these should not be a problem…after all you are building your dream house.. Paul and Alison’s adventures are not without trials, which makes building their dream house truly unforgettable, bitter sweet and a true test of their character.
