Can you stop the McMansion down the street?
What can you do if someone starts building a giant home, one that dwarfs the others in your neighborhood, next door to you? Or down the block? Can you stop it?
Maybe. But it’ll take a lot of hard work, at least according to this story, written by John Morell, at TheStreet.com.
It seems that the only people who like what we derisively call McMansions are those that are building them. Those that have to live near them, say that these giant homes ruin the character of their neighborhood of smaller homes. They worry that the giant house looming over theirs will lower their own property values.
But usually, complain is all that people do.
Morrell, though, offers homeowners facing a McMansion some options. He suggests that neighbors opposed to the size of a new home band together. They can then talk to the McMansion’s owner with their concerns. Maybe the owner will be sympathetic and will revise plans. If not, the neighbors may have to meet with a real estate attorney to see if there’s any use in fighting the plans in court.
Stopping a McMansion is no easy task, the story suggests. But it can be done, in the right circumstances.
I agree that McMansions are generally ugly eyesores that detract from neighboring properties. But shouldn’t the market determine what does and doesn’t get built? If there wasn’t a demand for these giant houses, construction crews wouldn’t be building them, right?
So here’s my question: Is it right to fight a McMansion? Or should we let market forces determine if these homes ever get built?
